손석희: Born in the USA. 아마도 반전을 노래한 노래, 곡들가운데 이렇게 많은 화제를 뿌린곡도 별로 없지 않나 싶은데. Bruce Springsteen이 1984년에 발표했습니다. 블루칼라 노동자로 태어나서 전쟁에 나가게 되고 베트콩과 싸우고 고향으로 돌아왔지만 참전군인으로써의 삶은 너무나 고단한 것이 미국의 현실이다. 이런내용인데요. 글쎄요. 베트남전은 어떻게 보면 미국사회 노동계급을 둘러쌌던 정치, 경제적 포위망이었다. 이런 해석이 당시에 나오기도 했습니다.
손석희: 이 노래하고 관련해서 코믹한일은 84년에 재선운동에 들어갔던 로널드 레이건 대통령에 의해서 벌어졌는데요. 선거 캠페인 기간에 레이건은 이 노래를 애국주의를 상징하는 노래로 오해해서 연설에도 인용을 했습니다. 아마 노래는 들어보지 않았던것 같습니다. 제목만 보고 그렇게 연설한 모양인데, 아무튼 나중에 이 연설을 들은 Bruce Springsteen이 나중에 이런말을 남겼습니다. 했습니다. "불한당에게 뒤통수를 맞은 기분이다."
